Topless Baker finds success with new podcast paying homage to The Great British Bake Off.
Self-taught baker Matt Adlard, also known as Topless Baker, had dreamed that one day he would become a Great British Bake Off contestant. His introduction to baking was slow. Beginning with simple recipes like bread and cookies, and then building up to the grandly decorated bakes he creates today – with a few disasters in between.
He documented his journey on his YouTube channel, and built a dedicated following online thanks to his new found skill (and lack of t-shirt), meaning he could make a living from his passion. However, this success had a downside. Bakers who have been paid for their work can’t have a place on the Great British Bake Off.
After watching many series from the side lines, Matt was desperate for a way in. His presence online meant that he’d built a great community of ex-contestants, baking experts, and GBBO enthusiasts. He decided to gather them together in an effort to quench his insatiable Bake Off thirst.
Alongside series nine episode one, Matt launched his own podcast called Bake Off Undressed to accompany the latest series. Each Tuesday, he invites a guest to watch the show with him, which they then discuss straight away over a microphone. The show is ready for download first thing every Wednesday morning, so fans never need wait too long for a post-show debrief.
Past guests have included home economist Juliet Sear, podcasting twins Niki and Sammy, Buzzfeed Bake Off correspondent Scott Bryan, and ex-Bake Off contestants Benjamina Ebuehi and Tamal Ray. Each week, Matt and the guests break down the show, nominating their highs and lows, their laugh out loud moments, and who they’d ‘spoon, fork, or knife’. The spin off show, produced by Dishy Media isn’t afraid to be brutally honest.
The shows are peppered with fascinating tit-bits, backstage gossip, and guilty pleasures. It’s remained an iTunes featured podcast for two weeks, racked up over 25000 downloads in just five weeks and was featured in Podmas, The AV Club’s weekly podcast recommendations blog. it’s proving to be as addictive as the show itself, attracting amateurs and seasoned bakers alike.
